Connecting Through LIFT

As a junior in college, I am always looking for ways to further my experience in Public Relations. Amy Summers has always provided ways to do just that. I got the opportunity to be part of the Penn State leg of the LIFT College Book Tour this past September.

During those three days, I shadowed Amy and gained valuable insight on visual storytelling, balancing client work and events, and also collaboration and communication. My role during this leg of the tour was to capture social media content, including Amy’s soundbites, students’ reactions, behind-the-scenes moments, and highlights from the overall Lift experience.

She also presented at several meetings including Women In Business, PRSSA, and Happy Valley COMM. Capturing diverse and appealing content isn’t always easy but I learned a lot about visual storytelling. Amy always emphasizes storytelling in a pitch, making compelling content is important, and I learned how to apply that same concept visually in the tour content that I was capturing.

Working alongside your boss is something that can be scary, but I honestly found it really cool. I actually got to sit in on a meeting with Amy for a client that I am currently pitching. I was able to hear client feedback and got to see how to balance in-person events with my client work. Seeing Amy handle both of these firsthand was motivating.

Even though there are two other Pitch Publicity interns here at Penn State I don’t ever get to see them. Amy brought us together by taking us to meetings, dinners, and also areas of Penn State and State College that we hadn’t seen before such as The Nittany Lion Shrine. Throughout team working dinners and events I learned the importance of collaboration and communication. Amy always emphasises the importance of teamwork and working effectively. I worked alongside the other Pitch Stars here at Penn State and made sure everything was set up and running on time. We made it a priority to connect with fellow students while capturing authentic moments throughout the tour. By collaborating with them, I was able to build meaningful connections while creating content that reflected the energy, engagement, and impact of the Lift College Book Tour.

Overall, it was amazing working alongside Amy and the other Pitch Stars and being able to connect in person is so valuable and Pitch Publicity definitely emphasizes that. It was a valuable learning opportunity that really showcased the real world experience that Pitch Publicity® provides.
